WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The US Food and Drug Administration today approved the first prescription weight-loss aid for the obese patient with an active form of obesity. The new drug, Xenical, will be the first of a new class of drugs called lipase inhibitors. It will be used to treat obesity and increase weight loss. The drug is being developed by researchers from the University of the State of New York.
The drug was developed as a drug to treat obesity and help to prevent heart disease and other health problems. The company said the FDA approval of Xenical was based on a "comprehensive, FDA-reviewed, clinical research study" that examined the effect of diet and exercise on the risk of developing heart disease in patients with obesity. Xenical was approved in 1999. It was available in several strengths, including 30mg and 60mg tablets.
"This is the first of a new class of drug known as lipase inhibitors," said Dr. Bruce A. Schmitz of New York University, who was not involved in the study.
Orlistat, sold as Xenical, works by binding to the in the liver and preventing its breakdown. The drug is used in the treatment of overweight and obesity and to improve the risk of developing heart disease. Xenical may also be used for other purposes, such as lowering cholesterol.
